Ateneo Grad, Philip Morris Supervisor Sparks Online Outrage; Company Should Fire its Employee!

August 15, 2012

There’s this YouTube video that sparked online outrage showing a beefy, decent-looking man mauling a helpless MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) traffic enforcer. The attacker was later on identified by strongly outraged netizens as Robert “Blair” Carabuena, a supervisor outsourcing at Philip Morris International and an Ateneo alumnus. A now popular online video of him assaulting a traffic enforcer identified as Saturno Fabros has been circulating on Facebook, blogs and other networking sites since it was uploaded on August 14.

A few hours after the video was posted online, enraged netizens were quick to conduct an online probe of the brawny attacker. Carabuena’s profile revealed that he also worked as former HR Recruiter in West Contact Services (a Telecom Company) and Consultant at ZMG Signium Ward Howell.

The video prompted journalists to contact Fabros who said he was just performing his official duty as an MMDA enforcer.  Carabuena had already deactivated his Facebook account and other online accounts.

From Interaksyon:

In an interview on the Good Morning Club Wednesday, Fabros said he tried to be strong and maintain his dignity as berated and slapped him in public, even as he admitted it was difficult for him to fight back his tears.

Para akong mapapaiyak nu’n, pero pinipigilan ko na lang po. Napahiya na po ako sa publiko (I felt like crying then, but I just held it back. I was humiliated in public),” Fabros said.

Fabros said it was the first time in his 30 years as enforcer at the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) that he had been treated with such disrespect.

He said he was only reprimanding Carabuena for making a wrong turn and was respectful throughout the incident.

The MMDA officer said his children saw the video and felt sorry for him

Naawa sila sa akin (They pitied me),” he said.

Fabros said he has yet to speak personally to MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino since the incident but has done to lawyer and traffic director Yves Gonzalez.

The MMDA filed criminal charges on August 15 against Carabuena for direct assault.

My take on the issue: Philip Morris should fire Carabuena!

But I’m still wondering why Carabuena acted so stupidly. Perhaps he thought his ‘person’ was good enough to suspend our laws… Too bad he didn’t know that mere “serious intimidation” of any person in authority or his agent while engaged in the performance of official duties constitutes direct assault

Several Facebook groups about Carabuena also surfaced. There’s this Facebook group that categorizes the guy as a ‘public figure’ and it already has more than 2,200 likes. Another group calls for the incarceration of the MMDA assailant and it already has more than 9,480 likes as of press time. Other anti-Carabuena Facebook groups include “We Hate Robert Blair Carabuena”, Robert Blair Carabuena Memes, Robert Blair Carabuena vs MMDA enforcer (PinoyDEMOCRAZYRobert Blair Carabuena Tarantadong Bastos na Baboy, Robert Blair Carabuena aka “Barney” vs MMDA Enforcer, Robert Blair Carabuena Fanpage XD, Robert “Blair” Carabuena – The MMDA Assailant, Die Robert Blair ” Wild Barney ” Carabuena, among many others.

Several YouTube videos of the citizens had been shut down due to “copyright claim by ABC Development Corporation,” which apparently legally owns the footage. Other videos by removed by their YouTube users.

Here’s a related report:

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said he has directed the Legal Service to file direct assault charges against Robert Blair Carabuena, recruitment officer of the multinational tobacco company, on behalf of Traffic Constable Saturnino Fabros.

The criminal complaint will be filed today at the Office of the City Prosecutor in Quezon City.

“We cannot allow this aggression and shameless attack against our men who are only doing their job as best as they can, regardless of the risks they face in the streets every day,” Tolentino said.

Saying the assault on Fabros is also an attack against the MMDA, Tolentino demanded that Carabuena issue a public apology.

Carabuena was caught on camera slapping Fabros several times over a traffic violation. Fabros said he had tried to apprehend Carabuena after he ignored the stop signal at the corner of Capitol Drive and Tandang Sora Avenue in Quezon City.

Tolentino said he will also ask the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to cancel Carabuena’s driver’s license as “abusive and arrogant motorists like him, who obviously do not have serious regard to the rule of law, have no right to be in the road in the first place.”

Under the Revised Penal Code, direct assault is charged to any person who shall attack, employ force, or seriously intimidate or resist any person in authority or any of his agents, while engaged in the performance of official duties.

Direct assault is punishable by a prison term of six months to six years.

Tolentino said the criminal liability of Carabuena is aggravated by the fact — as shown in the video footages — that he laid his hands upon Fabros, a person in authority.

“As with all of our men who were attacked and intimidated by undisciplined motorists while performing their duties, we will see to it that justice is served to Mr. Fabros,” the MMDA chief said, adding that they will extend all possible assistance to the traffic constable.

This is a good lesson for everybody.

How some netizens reacted? Read the following reactions:

From a Facebook friend named Marky: “His name is Robert “Blair” Carabuena. Not Robert Paulson. He aint from fightclub. He is from Philip Morris, a graduate of Ateneo. You think money teaches class? don’t bet on it. This guy, also known as “Wild Barney” is a pig, in both physical and personality trait. Remember the name of the pig. Robert “Wild Barney” Carabuena. In this video, our wild pig barney hits a helpless MMDA enforcer who was just doing his job of policing undisciplined drivers on the road.”

A Facebooker named Makin: “Most MMDA pose a really rude approach to some motorists. I, personally, despise the physical violence shown on the video but this video only shows one side of the story, the MMDA officer being assaulted. Blair should be given a chance to explain what lead him to such action. We are all smart enough not to take this video in a very shallow manner. Let’s not all get trapped with the rich vs poor mentality here. Hear both sides.”

A Facebooker named Arthur: “This is a case of Physical Injury and Verbal Abuse/Oral Defamation… What is worse is the pain and sleepless nights that this poor MMDA Officer will suffer for how long we do not know… Let’s hope hindi nya dadalhin ang problema nya sa bahay nila at your asawa’t anak ang babalingan ng poot nya…”

A Facebooker named Alvin: “Let this be a life lesson to all of us in the realm of social media and the internet that everything is being recorded (heck I even have the conscious effort of looking from left to right before picking my nose in public LOL). Big Brother is watching and to wild barney I hope you get a damn good freggin lawyer dude. Don’t worry nandyan naman is Phillip Morris on your side. One this is certain, Robert “Blair” Carabuena, You will be humbled. (Darnit’ cant seem to get over his man boobs ROFL)”

From a YouTuber named royfabros: “A typical elitist and barbaric graduate from Ateneo de Manila University (Perhaps the 2nd most prestigious university in the Philippines; a Catholic school , where the corrupt husband of the evil dwarf president of the Philippines (Gloriatiq Arro-yak) graduated, and where the latter also taught Economics. Mr Arroyo and the Impeached Chief Justice Corona were classmates at Ateneo Law School. I just dont know what course this BS! Carabuena completed.”

From PLAKATONG of YouTube: “Train the MMDA Traffic enforcers better ! This man wears a UNIFORM and is being treated disrespectful in public ! NO WAY !! The traffic enforcer should have arrested that FAT ASSHOLE. Take away the drivers license of GAGO MAN for good, he is unstable and should not be allowed to drive a vehicle. I wish he gets fired from Philip Morris and serves a jail sentence. WE DO NOT NEED ASSHOLES LIKE YOU!”

A number of online posts/comments on Facebook and YouTube also posted Carabuena’s personal information, such as his cellphone number, complete address, the model of his car, and its plate number. I cannot post those information here for ethical reasons.

Here’s a piece of advice for passionate, outraged netizens:

  • Keep calm;
  • Refrain from making threatening comments;
  • Please stop posting the guy’s number, address and other personal information. Let justice take its natural course. A criminal complaint has already been filed against the assailant so there’s no need to make ‘threats’.
  • Do not stoop down to his level.

Should Philip Morris fire Carabuena for showing a very excellent, moral, responsible behavior of a corporate officer? 😉

Meanwhile in the United States, a company called Vante fired its CFO for bullying a drive-thru employee of Chick-fil-a, a restaurant owned by an anti-gay marriage businessman.

Vante released the following statement after firing its bully CFO:

“Vante regrets the unfortunate events that transpired yesterday in Tucson between our former CFO/Treasurer Adam Smith and an employee at Chick-fil-A,” the company said in a statement. “Effective immediately, Mr. Smith is no longer an employee of our company.
“We hope that the general population does not hold Mr. Smith’s actions against Vante and its employees,” the statement continued.

What did the Vante CFO do that cost him his job? He posted the following video clip on YouTube:

Although the enforcer looks like a pitiful victim here, I think all motorists are sick and tired of the abuse, extortion attempts, false accusations and big headed mentality of not only the MMDA but the corrupt police as well.

I don’t condone Carabuena’s behavior but I think the MMDA/Police bring upon themselves the disrespect they receive.

Of course it is a losing battle to stand up to public service employees, since govt. has the force and power to incarcerate, when one of their own gets abused regardless of which party is in the right.

So with this information are we supposed to throw rocks at his house and cheer the MMDA?

Why do we not see this public outrage when the police brutality occurs? There has certainly been more cases of the latter than the former..

      • August 16, 2012 3:38

Yup! Like I said, let the natural course of justice work and prevail. Posting those information won’t make any positive difference.
By the way, I invoke my property right and editorial prerogative to censor that.

    Dignity in Poverty
    (the way of Saturnino Fabros)
    by: Apolinario B. Villalobos

    Poise…. pride….
All these, we have in us
But can we hold on to them
When our family miss not only one
But all meals in a day sometimes?

Can we hold on to them
As sometimes we just stay home
    Instead of reporting to work
When even loose change for fare
    We have none?

Can we hold on to them
    As we see our family
    Sit it out at night
    Not a wink of sleep
Due to the roof that leaks?

Can we hold on to them
    As we see our children
    Clad in tattered clothes
    Barefooted as they play around
    Or trod the muddy road?

Can we hold on to them
When we are berated by others
Who felt or thought to be slighted
As we do our job –
    With all sincerity and honesty?

    Temptation is always there –
    Ready to delightedly push us
    Towards the verge of misdeed
    Making us just remorseful later
    Blaming ourselves without end.

Poverty has been part of life
    Not everybody can be rich
Contentment then of what we have
Should be the norm, nobody to blame
Just feel dignified …most of all –strive!

    Saturnino Fabros
    … humility personified

    By: Apolinario B. Villalobos

When God created man and woman
    Perfection was in His mind;
In His image they were molded
    But what happened in Paradise
Was unfortunate, for it proved –
    His creations were weak;
    He could have asked Himself
    How he could have failed.

    Just like Adam and Eve
    Who, with virtues were created
Around each of us lurks temptation
And it’s up to us how to resist it
Which is just waiting to embrace
The weak who may finally give way
    To uncontrolled desire to burst
Into uncalled for action he could vent.

Humility is difficult to live out
As pride always gets in the way
    But not for Saturnino Fabros
Who stood tall despite humiliations –
    Blows, berating and all
    From Carabuena brothers –
    Traffic rules violators.

    His lean body unmoving
And eyes fixed on Robert Carabuena
Who shouted at him with all his might
All these Fabros took with all humility…
    Admirable, indeed, as many later saw on TV;
Pride of Metro Manila Development Authority
Saturnino Fabros is one great guy to admire –
A true Filipino… he personified humility!
