On Government Welfare and Sports Program

September 25, 2011
  • From my Formspring account. Someone asked the following question: “Is the Department of Social Welfare and Development part of the welfare statist programs of the government?  If it is abolished then who’ll be responsible for the crime victims that need counseling and support?”

“Is the Department of Social Welfare and Development a part of the welfare statist programs of the government?”

Yes. Absolutely.

“If it is abolished, then who’ll be responsible for the crime victims that need counseling and support?”

It should be abolished. First, if you’re a crime victim we have an established legal system that allows you to run after your victimizer. About counseling and support, that should not be the role of government. It’s either you have to pay for your counseling and/or support expenses and then add that to your claim for damages against the defendant. Let private organizations and NGOs help crime victims.

Someone also asked: “What can you say about the artists and athletes who needs support, particularly financial support from the government?

I don’t think they need government’s financial support other than moral support. Any Artist who demands or needs government support must be condemned or rejected. Why would an artist need government support, especially financial support? If he’s a real artist then he’s got to trade and market his talent and skills. Do you think Van Gogh and the world’s renowned artists today became successful, financially and in terms of prestige, because of government support? If you’re an “artist” and you demand government’s financial support, I think you should quit being an “artist” and get a new job. Prove that you’re a real artist by marketing your art works to the public. You don’t need a government decree to tell you that you’re an artist. It’s the people or your consumers/buyers who attest/prove that you deserve to be called an artist.

The same principle applies to athletes. However, since the system makes our athletes dependent on the government, minimal support should be given to them. Commercial sports is the only answer and solution. America’s NBA and other sports leagues are financially successful because they’re not depended on their government. The commercialization of sports would not only benefit athletes, their coaches and trainers; it would also create jobs and other employment opportunities for the nation’s jobless.
