“We Are The World” Remake for Haiti: A Temporary Panacea for Poverty

February 13, 2010

We all sympathize with the victims of a 7.0-magnitude killer earthquake in Haiti. The greatest singers in the world converged together for a remake of Michael Jackson’s and Lionel Richie’s legendary composition “We Are The World.” More than 80 of the music’s biggest stars gathered at Henson Studios in the heart of Hollywood charity remake of world’s most renowned song in support of Haitian earthquake relief.

Among the voices in the 81-member choir were Pink, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Nick Jonas, LL Cool J, Robin Thicke, Celine Dion, Akon, Rob Thomas, Wyclef, Jeff Bridges, Vince Vaughn, Barbra Streisand, Jordin Sparks, Good Charlotte’s Madden brothers, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, Snoop Dogg, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Keri Hilson, Jamie Foxx, Tyrese, Katharine McPhee, Sean Garrett, Will.I.Am, Carlos Santana, Melanie Fiona, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton, Jason Mraz, Miley Cyrus, Busta Rhymes, Nicole Scherzinger, Nicole Richie, Usher, Julianne Hough, Raphael Saadiq, Zac Brown, India.Arie, “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson, Musiq Soulchild, Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson, Fonzworth Bentley, Kid Cudi, Iyaz, Bizzy Bone, Nipsey Hussle, the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, Trey Songz, Faith Evans, Mya and Gladys Knight. Among the soloists whose sessions were screened for journalists at press time were Bieber, Dion and Groban. Lil Wayne also came out and humbly noted that he recorded the solo originally sung by Bob Dylan. (Head here for a full list of “We Are the World” participants.)

They need to embrace the value of freedom and individual rights!

They need to embrace the value of freedom and individual rights!

Charity is good so long as you do not put the interest and welfare of others above your own. It is good to help the less fortunate so long as they know how to help themselves. The United States of America and other developed or first world nations have been sending reliefs and financial aides to poor countries in Africa, but it seems that nothing happened, because the relief money and goods simply vanished into the deep pockets of corrupt politicians. It is good to help Haiti but we must understand that this country was and is governed by a corrupt government that disregards freedom and individual rights.

In my previous blog entitled “The High Cost of Ignoring Freedom,” I stated the following:

Is there any connection between the degree of a country’s freedom and the security and happiness of its people? Is there any possible correlation between a country’s degree and appreciation of liberty and rights and the outcome of natural calamities and man-made devastation? Do we have to look at the functions (e.g. controls and regulations) of the government if protecting the rights and happiness of every individual is our main goal? My answer is Yes, Yes, Yes!

In his article entitled Haiti’s Avoidable Death Toll, Economist Walter E. Williams states that there’s inevitable connection between the degree of a country’s freedom and the outcome of natural calamities. Williams stressed:

“As tragic as the Haitian calamity is, it is merely symptomatic of a far deeper tragedy that’s completely ignored, namely self-inflicted poverty. The reason why natural disasters take fewer lives in our country is because we have greater wealth.

“It’s our wealth that permits us to build stronger homes and office buildings. When a natural disaster hits us, our wealth provides the emergency personnel, heavy machinery and medical services to reduce the death toll and suffering. Haitians cannot afford the life-saving tools that we Americans take for granted.”

No one knows if the Haitians would be able to fully recover in just a matter of one or two years. What we know is that they need to build their lives all over again. However, the best thing a free or developed nation could do is not to send monetary reliefs to the people in Haiti, but to teach them the true concept and essence of freedom and individual rights.

The Philippines is better off than Haiti, but if the Filipinos continue to disregard the value of individual rights and freedom, social, political, economic, and even natural destruction is inevitable. If a country begins to learn how to value liberty and individual rights, it would be able to establish a new “renaissance.” What saves a nation is not religion or foreign reliefs, but a profound understanding that freedom and individual rights are the most valuable impetus for wealth creation. Like I stated before:

Many of us in these parts wonder why the Philippines remains a poor country despite the fact that it is the only Christian nation in Asia. It is not religion that will save a country from any political, economic or social disaster- it is the men and women who value the right and proper idea- the idea that for man to live on earth, he must choose the right philosophy, and cherish the ideals of liberty and individual rights. What most people don’t know is that any religion, whether it be Christianity, Islam, or Buddhism, is based on an idea that man is a determined, helpless being who must submit his life to a divine supernatural entity they call God. Every religion is based on the morality of altruism, which holds that man has to put the interest and welfare of others above his own. All kinds of religion have their unique concept of “original sin,” a supernatural imposition that condemns man before he is born.

This country remains poor because it was never founded on the right, uncompromising philosophy, a philosophy for living on earth. An uncompromising philosophy is that which rejects contradictions, false premises, and vague generalities. A man’s right and moral principles cannot be compromised. A man’s right to speak freely cannot be overruled by an edict that makes it illegal for men to speak the truth against religious bigotry or fanaticism or against corruption any any act of perversion by the government. A man’s right to the fruits of his own labor cannot be overridden by any dictatorial directive that forces him to contribute a portion of his earnings to a welfare statist government that vowed to serve the interests of the poor. A man’s rights and nature hold that man is an end in himself and not the means to the ends of others. This is the premise that made America the greatest nation on earth. This is the only premise that can make our poor country great, but only if we know its proper relation to reality, reason, politics (which is capitalism), and man’s ethics.

The world’s biggest names in Hollywood, along with the millionaire and billionaire philanthropists and those who are pushing for more foreign reliefs like Bono, should understand that only freedom and individual rights can save a nation of disaster. The people in Haiti need to embrace these ideals if they want to rebuild their lives and make Haiti a better place to live. Ayn Rand once wrote:

If concern for human poverty and suffering were one’s primary motive, one would seek to discover their cause. One would not fail to ask: Why did some nations develop, while others did not? Why have some nations achieved material abundance, while others have remained stagnant in subhuman misery? History and, specifically, the unprecedented prosperity-explosion of the nineteenth century, would give an immediate answer: capitalism is the only system that enables men to produce abundance—and the key to capitalism is individual freedom.

Ayn Rand’s philosophy is little more than a celebration of adolescent selfishness.

    • February 13, 2010 3:38

Oh yes, that’s what most ignoramuses say about Ayn Rand. Those ignoramuses like you who just relied on the lies and drivels of bitter critics.

  2. February 13, 2010 3:38

Adherents of Ayn Rand are some of the most immature political thinkers among us. The comment you just made is an excellent example of that. Anyone past the age of 19 who adheres to the silly notions set forth in Rand’s novels cannot be taken seriously.

    • February 13, 2010 3:38

Well, I’d like to know then your proof that “adherents of Ayn Rand are some of the most immature political thinkers among us” and do not simply make bitter and derogatory comments. A rational and mature person wouldn’t simply make claims without any proof. Nobody’s forcing you to read her novels. You can say whatever claims you want here but that doesn’t erase the fact that many people became more successful and rational because of Ayn Rand’s philosophy. If you want to spread your ideals, fine. If you want to disprove Ayn Rand, that’s just fine so long as you do it in a proper, rational manner. Don’t act like a hippie or a religious bigot.

      • February 13, 2010 3:38

It is the immature Randian ideas about economics that have brought us to the current crisis. Unbridled greed and selfishness make people reckless. Who would have guessed that!

Well anyone with an ounce of sense would have.

Even Rand pupil, Alan Greenspan has admitted now that there are flaws. Here is a link to the New York Times article:

      • February 13, 2010 3:38

Is that it? So you relied on a single article to form your ignorant rant? That’s funny and pathetic then. Does Greenspan represent Ayn Rand? The answer is No. If your answer is yes, then all pedophile priests and pastors who abused children and who claim they are God’s messenger on earth must also represent Jesus Christ or his old Dad. If you’re the man who really owns the link to your comment, then I can say that you’re really misrepresenting your Jesus Christ with your pathetic comments. Do you represent the gospel of God on earth? Then I must say that’s how Jesus Christ would behave if he were on earth. I’m just following your logic here. You cannot attribute to the teacher the independent acts of his student. If you did, that would be a mockery of reason and justice.

The ignorant critics of Ayn Rand usually use Alan Greenspan to destroy her without making an effort to know what Ms Rand was really advocating for. Greenspan did not betray Ayn Rand or the free-market capitalism, he betray his “self.” Besides, Greenspan never embodied the ideals of free-market capitalism which is the advocacy of Ayn Rand. If there’s a philosopher of the past century who was the victim of grave injustice, ignorance, and leftist-conservative propaganda, that would be Ayn Rand.

“It is the immature Randian ideas about economics that have brought us to the current crisis.”

Really? Then you are one of the most ignorant commenters on my blog then! Is it not statism or excessive government intervention that brought America to economic disaster? This is now a plain proof that you’re utterly ignorant of economics. You’re one of the reasons why a country falls into socialism.

I have already tackled this matter a long time ago. Read my other blog entitled Statism: A Love Story. And this one too: Does Capitalism Produce Slavery, Monopoly, and Unearned Wealth?.

If it’s any good news, most of them do outgrow this stage. Though not always.

      Ahh, “We are the World”

I hear Jamie Foxx pulled off an impressive performance for its latest incarnation. My only question is: Why, oh dear FSM, WHY, did they have to include Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers in the roster?

      Hasn’t Haiti suffered enough?

      • February 15, 2010 3:38

Haiti suffered enough, but like Walter E. Williams said, the death toll is avoidable. Haiti’s current ordeal can be compared to what happened to Metro Manila when we were hit my typhoon Ondoy in terms of preparedness and the ability to mitigate loss of lives and destruction of property.

Like I stated before: “The typhoon Ondoy that submerged entire Metro Manila was clearly a natural phenomenon, but logic tells us that its effects could have been prevented had the government known how to deal with the forces of nature. A natural phenomenon is the metaphysically given, meaning that which is part of nature and beyond the power of man to control. The typhoon Ondoy that put the entire metropolis under water is the metaphysically given. We cannot— since we don’t have any powerful climate-altering technology yet— control natural calamities like typhoon, earthquake, and tsunami, but we can control or minimize their effects. Flooding, which is the effect of continuous rainfall, is not the metaphysically given, thus it can be controlled or manipulated by man.”

Yes, Haiti suffered enough because of its corrupt government and corrupt public officials who disregard the value of freedom and individual rights.

“Is it not statism or excessive government intervention that brought America to economic disaster?”

No the current crisis was not caused by statism. It was caused by inadequate regulation of financial markets, where people were making decisions that were in their own short term interest, but for which the rest of us will have to pay for over the long term.

BTW: Of course I didn’t base my “ignorant rant” on a “single article”. The link was provided to you as an illustration of my point. You really are very foolish.

I’m not going to waste anymore of my time on this ridicuous exchange.

“No the current crisis was not caused by statism. It was caused by inadequate regulation of financial markets, where people were making decisions that were in their own short term interest, but for which the rest of us will have to pay for over the long term.”

This is the most evil statement I’ve ever read. The worst thing anyone could do is to argue with an ignoramus who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Natural calamity means natural disaster which is caused by nature. Every year many country falls victim to various natural calamities. They are flood, earthquakes & many other natural calamities. The effects of the natural calamities beggar description. They leave a vast trail of devastation. The affected people & animals suffer untold sufferings. They cause heavy damage to our life & properties. Houses are destroyed, cattle are washed away, crops are greatly damaged and trees are uprooted. Thousands of people and other animals remain without food for many days. The after effect of some natural calamities are more serious. Famine breaks out. Many people & animals die for want of food. The prices are all necessary things go up. Many dangerous diseases like cholera, typhoid and dysentery etc. break out in an epidemic form. By raising public awareness and taking necessary precautionary measures and steps natural calamities can be prevented. The government and all the conscious citizens should come forward with concerted efforts to prevent natural calamities.
